The older, now partly ruined, was ascribed to Telford who certainly built a road here between 1808 and 1811, but it is now considered to be a mid nineteenth century structure. Telford's spans were 50 and 46 feet and he had no flood arch, whereas these spans are 60 and 45 feet and there is a neat clapper bridge on the left bank to take flood water. The modern bridge, built in 1933 by Mears and Carus-Wilson, spans the river at a different angle with an arch of 90 feet and a small flood arch on the west bank. It is built of reinforced concrete faced with rubble. There are refuges in the abutments. [1, 4]
